The Univille Publishing House has just launched the book “Human Rights, Culture of Peace and Democracy in Latin America and the Caribbean”, edited by Professor Fernanda Brandão Lapa, co-coordinator of the UNESCO Chair on Education for Citizenship and Human Rights at the University of the Region of Joinville (Univille). The book is the result of a collaborative academic project involving university chairs from six countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. It brings together reflections and experiences from these spaces, connecting critical thinking, research, and action to promote peace and democracy.

The publication is available free of charge through the UNESCO Digital Library: https://shre.ink/jp61.

The digital book brings together 12 articles written by UNESCO Chairs from institutions in Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Mexico. One of the articles was authored by Fernanda Brandão Lapa and Professor Sirlei Souza, who currently also serves on the coordination team of Univille’s UNESCO Chair.

The publication aims to foster scientific and cultural exchange and strengthen South-South Cooperation in addressing both longstanding and emerging challenges related to social development, citizenship, and human rights in Latin American and Caribbean democracies.

“This is the first scientific publication of the UNESCO Network of Chairs on Human Rights Education and Culture of Peace in Latin America and the Caribbean, established in 2023 and coordinated by Univille until the end of this year. The goal is to promote collaboration in teaching, research, and community outreach among Latin American and Caribbean universities,” explained Fernanda.

In addition to the six countries that contributed articles to the book, the UNESCO Network of Chairs on Human Rights Education and Peace in Latin America and the Caribbean also includes higher education institutions from Colombia and Puerto Rico.

The publication by Fernanda Brandão Lapa is aligned with UNESCO’s Management of Social Transformations (MOST) Programme, which seeks to strengthen the links between scientific research and public policy development. The initiative aims to translate knowledge produced by universities and research centers into concrete strategies that foster more just, inclusive, and sustainable societies. By bringing together reflections and practices from UNESCO Chairs across Latin America and the Caribbean, the book presents evidence, critical perspectives, and experiences that can inform public policies aimed at promoting human rights, peace, and democracy.

Established in 2020, Univille’s UNESCO Chair on Education for Citizenship and Human Rights seeks to strengthen a research and cooperation network among Latin American universities. The initiative aims to connect different groups and initiatives working on human rights within higher education institutions, encouraging the exchange of experiences and good practices among countries.
